Not on the electoral roll

Not on the electoral roll? Good luck getting a loan!

Yes it’s as simple as that! It’s unusual for lenders to make you a loan if you’re not on the electoral roll. Luckily, it’s an easy problem to fix. Simply registering to vote gets you on to the electoral roll.

This one thing will significantly increase your chances of getting a loan – at least an affordable one!

How to sign up

To register to vote in the UK, you must be:

  • A British citizen
  • An Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
  • A Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK
  • Living in the UK (or, if you’re a UK citizen living abroad, you must have registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years)
  • Not legally excluded from voting (e.g. members of the House of Lords, convicted prisoners)

If for some reason, you cannot register to vote, you could add a notice of correction onto your credit file to explain why.

You can register to vote here.

It takes about 5 minutes and so there really is no excuse.
